Sean is an old man who lives in the Canadian Rockies in a small village on the side of a mountain by the water in the Kootenays, a region named after the Kutenai First Nations people in southern Canada. He lives simply and consciously in tune with nature, he consumes little and enjoys the beauty of the place every day. Daily tasks punctuate his winter days.Far from the artificial pleasures of industrial civilization, Sean cultivates his own asceticism, based on a "happy sobriety". Ignoring the rules of our new world, his traditional way of life remains much healthier and more modern than most of his contemporaries who are trying to find a way to heal themselves.

Bio
Kootenays is Thomas Gauthier's second book after Journées also published by publishing house EYD. This work corresponds to the photographer's months with Sean in the Kootenays region.Thomas Gauthier shows in his work Kootenays a raw, unvarnished world, in the image of Sean. With his portraits he also questions our relationship to nudity and our idealizing aesthetic and romantic vision of the nude. Behind the transparency of these images, there is no political naivety because in life, it is about having access to what delights us, not just to what nourishes us.
Carpenter by trade, he has long been making his raw and sensitive books in the image of his photography. Thomas Gauthier's photographs question the possibilities of poetic expression in a world producing its own ruins.
