Beyond the bridge is the second book by Japanese photographer Tokio Okada. Following Eternal Echoes—which explored Japanese childhood in a sensory, minimalist homage to Miyazaki—the photographer, still deeply engaged in introspection, turns his lens toward Paris, specifically the city’s *périphérique* (ring road). In the grip of profound depression, he wanders the city until he finds himself on a bridge. The bridge induces a sense of vertigo in those who cross it, while the roar of the traffic passing below creates a deafening din; yet, within this setting, a surprising humanity emerges. Lost in dark thoughts, the photographer catches the gaze of certain drivers—glances that mirror his own despair. In a sudden surge of vital energy, Okada reaches for his camera, clinging to signs of life as if driven by an instinct for survival.
Developed over the course of several days, this project takes on a playful quality, becoming a space for exchange and dialogue.
