Ilanit Illouz has explored an area on the edge of the Dead Sea, a natural border between three countries (Palestine, Israel, and Jordan). Two countries overexploit this area, while another lives there without the right to exploit its natural resources. This has resulted in the creation of sinkholes, holes that open in the ground as the Dead Sea recedes. She then immerses her photographs in a bath of Dead Sea salt water, producing unique and original salt prints. Winner of the Louis Roederer Discovery Prize at the 2021 Rencontres d’Arles photography festival. The book Wadi Qelt, in the Clarity of Stones brings together the body of images taken in the Judean Desert and documents Ilanit Illouz's specific and long-term artistic project, The Sinkholes (2016-2021).
